Photography for the front page -

What normally consists on the front page of magazines are artists in a variety of different ways such as:

Dramatic poses - This focuses on the main man - ALEX TURNER

Unusual designs such as : this one that can also be used as a cover photo as well as a album photo.
They can be adjusted in photo shop.

CLOSE UPS

+

MEDIUM SHOT
These type of shots are used for secondary leads.

There is also live shots and stage shots and also poster style shots. So I am going to show you some of these below. These type of shots show the artist not posing or wanting to create an impression its just them doing what they love and also the poster shots are to promote the album. So they have to make that great, and the arctic monkeys one below is!

This is the poster for the latest Arctic Monkeys tour with the strypes.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR THE CONTENTS PAGE

For the contents page you could use a variety of different shots such as mug shots with some editing.

This type of shot would be really good for a contents page but it is mainly used for double page spreads as it shows a varies of different looks and poses.

It looks really good and effective and people would be interested in seeing this. Even if edited so that only the head and part of the neck was showing.

Framing also would be useful to use onto a contents page as it is different and also unique.  Like the ones below. The contents would be able to work around the shape.

Close ups of clothing or instruments also work well with the contents page :
This is because people like to see stuff with vivid detail and like looking at things that they wouldn't normally look at like that. It also is just a different way of looking at something and generally looks nice and better with a special focus on it.

Using just what you did on the cover is also fine. Like more band and artist shots.

Unusual designs can be used that represent the artists such as for ARCTIC MONKEY:

These logos are for the different albums and people know that these are to do with the arctic monkeys and the first one is defiantly distinctive enough to not really realise to.
They are used as album covers also. These can be changed around in photo shop.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD.
A shot series could be used this is a fun and exciting way to get readers to read the article.  Like this one below.

What also could be used is a wide angle shot.

Also a long and loosely framed shot would be effective.

Possible Names for music magazine -

Swipe
SH
Amp
Cut
Plug
Rift                                  I want my title of my magazine to be snappy and short.
Script
Mix
Out
Pulse
Dirt
BOSS
FAUX
Dodge
RARE
RAW
DIRECT
BOLD
INTENSE
Backup

These magazine names are just a few that I would consider in making my magazine. I want a name that has a meaning behind it, and none of these as yet, I have found a good enough meaning.

I want my colour scheme to be allot like NME and Q. Such as RED YELLOW AND BLACK as the main colours. I'm wanting a almost indie and yet an alternative music edge to my magazine, so that it could do issues that would cater to all artists depending on the edit. I want the fonts to be bold and usually block fonts.

I really like how these are set out and I will be looking at this when creating my final magazine cover. I like the fonts GEORGIA which is what I am using here. TIMES and others. I will more than likely be downloading or creating a font however for my magazine.

Here are my fonts that I would like on my music magazine.

I want borders and other conventions such as NME does. I don't want any borders on anything except for deals such as the NME above in the yellow circle. I would consider trying to put all of the normal conventions into my magazine. Which includes borders, pictures, slogans, boxes and banners.

In my magazine as a whole. I want the overall style to be different but with similar traits of those like NME and Q and Kerrang. I want loads of conventions and I will be using a range of photography and photos.

Here i really like the layout of the VANITY FAIR magazine. It look smart and Cooke but different also. I just generally like it.

I also like the background the grey but with the glow from him around it.

I would want my contents to be about new artists as well as old and what they are all doing and what they are up to. I want people to be interested in my magazine, so offers and posters will also be in there as well as a few badges,I want a magazine that engages with audiences and people want to read it and even look in it. Enough to buy it. I want the price to be a reasonable 2 pound and maybe more depending on what issue and whats in it. Colour scheme, i want white, black, red, yellow. These may alternate. But generally these. I love white writing on a black background though. Personal preference.  The graphic features would be thing on the front that attract attention about bands gigs and concerts, festivals. the latest news and offers really. WANT PEOPLE TO BE INTERESTED.

Questionare results and analysis

My Questionnaire Results and Question analysis

What catches your attention from a magazine cover? tick as many as you think
The title
30%
The price
0%
The front picture
10%
The headings
10%
The artist on the front
40%
The smaller pictures if any
0%
The interviews
10%
The reviews
0%

This shows that audiences take more notice of the artist on the front than anything else on the magazine. It also shows that the title is also important to readers and partially interviews, headings and the front pictures. The artist on the front was an obvious choice that I would have chosen as it is the normal thing to see first which has to draw you in. If you are interested in that person that you obviously want to read the article.

Are you male or female and do you think that this influences what magazine you are interested in ?

Male - yes because I would not want to read an gossip magazine or fashion or one with loads of hunky men in

Female and yes because I like fashion and them kinds of magazines because I'm nosey

Male I think gender does influence interests as most males would not buy fashion magazines or gossip magazines

Female and yes and I look for different things

This information shows that what gender you are does influence you, in what magazine you buy. This research shows that men would not by gossip or fashion magazines, whereas girls would and they enjoy being nosey in celebs lives. However, women would also not typically want to read about motorbikes and cars and football which is why the gender does matter when creating a music magazine as the Creator must make a target audience for it.

Do you think that a balance of material is shown in all magazines?

Yes 0%
No 100%
Other 0%

This information suggests that audiences do not think that a balance of material is shown in magazines. Here every person that took the questionnaire said that they are not happy with the balance of material shown. This means that the magazine is not fulfilling its purpose properly and should cover all basis of a magazine. Reader and buyers always want what they pay for.

Do you buy your own magazines or does another source buy them for you?

I pay for my own100%
Another person buys me them 0%
I look at them on line0%
I don't waste my money 0%
I don't have enough money usually to buy them0%

Here it shows that everyone who took the questionnaire said that they pay for their own magazine and no one else buys it for them and they don't ever not have enough money to pay for it. This suggests that most magazines that people want and not that expensive and most people can afford them no matter what.

Would you say that magazines draw you in by who is on their front cover or would you say that most people are interested in the articles?

The front cover and the articles relation to it.

Front cover

I think that attention is initially drawn from the photography on the cover this then forces people to read the articles.

The magazine front cover draws you in first then the articles draw you in afterwards.

Here this research suggest that audiences think that the front cover is the thing that draws you to the magazine in the first place. However, it is said that it draws you in but the articles make you read it if they are interesting. The front cover picture is the main reason why the front draws you in, if you like them then it will work and if you dont then you may be interested in something else involved with the same magazine.

Do you like to read magazines and the way they tell the articles?

Yes 100%
No0%

This shows that audiences like to read magazine and genrally like what the publishers put in them. They like the over all feel and how its told and this is shown by all of the people who took the questionare.

Where do you live?

This shows that most people that took the
questionare are from middlesbrough and only one from Whitby.
Middlesbrough375%
Brotton and guisbrough 00%
Whitby125%
skelton and loftus00%
Other00%

What interests and hobbies do you have or enjoy?

I play football (1)
Photography Cinema Socialising (2)
Not many  (3)
I enjoy hockey and clothing and shopping also music (4)

This research shows that there are 2 people that are sporty, one likes a mixure of things and one just did not say. However, this suggests that the people that said plays football and enjoys hockey will be interested in a magazine that is sporty whereas person (2)would rather a photography magazine. This also meas that (4) will also enjoy gossip and fashion magazines, however, all of the above may not like any of what i have concluded but what they have said suggests that they will.

What do your parents or guardians do for a living ?

They have their own business.

Dad-  works for british gas mum- accountant

Dad - Regional manager for a truck parts company Mother - Sales Assistant

They work for various companys

Here it shows a variety of different jobs for different parents. However, they all work for a business of some sort and are earning good money. This may suggest that they would buy magazines as they vcan afford it and also making their child afford it to. This also shows that everyone who answerd my questionaire is working class and would not really buy the more exspensive magazines of the upperclass.

Who is your icon or hero? Who do you look up to?

I look up to people famous directors such as Michel Gondry and Chris Nolan

I dont really have one, but i like many people

Dont have one

David beckham

This shows how people look upto different people and this could lead to them wanting to read about them in magazines which would influence them to buy them. If you see your role model or someone you love on a magazine front cover with a big picture you are automaticly drawn to it .This is why most magazines have famous people on the front or big bands because the band or person will have a massive following and would then read the magazine which creates a larger audience and it keeps on going.

This is my Questionaire analysis and results from it :)

College magazine and contents

COLLEGE MAGAZINE AND CONTENTS.

This was the College magazine that I had created. The photo I have used is a mid shot. I have used headlines and tag lines and kickers. Ive used interesting stories that students of prior would be interested in and would read.

What went well ? - photography went well because I have a good mid shot that shows student life pretty well with the happy expression on the models face. It shows a relaxed atmosphere also. I had enough photos to have chosen from but a limited one of mid shots, but the others where fine and this one works perfectly.

Using the soft were I found it difficult with all the tricky bits, but got used to it in the end. I found most difficulty's moving pictures and inserting coloured text. What was good about it was the fact that you could merge and blur images and overlap them. You could also do funky things with the text.

I wouldn't say that my prototype was the best but it has the typical conventions and shows a range of them. It shows a good range of stories and the photo is amusing and good. I could of made the text stand out more though and I could of used more contents for readers to look at. I like aspects of it such as colours and the photo. I would change the bottom and Merge it more and add more contents.

Other bloggers said that it is a good attempt and first draft. It didn't have to be perfect for the first draft but it was good enough to be looked at. They also liked the photo and liked the way it went with the text. The laughed at some of the text and would of liked to read the story on Judy Burton and the hot teachers.
I chose this the way I did just because I liked the idea of it. The audience research influenced it a bit and I knew what they would of liked to read about and look at. But it was generally what I wanted to do with it. I chose my own approach with what the audience would of wanted, I felt like I knew best and they would enjoy it.

CONTENTS

This is my contents page. I believe the strength of this is the wording of CONTENTS and the merging of the pictures.I love the way I have out the text under the pictures also, showing a rang of what the magazine does have to offer. The main articles also look good with the colours and the text makes it look interesting and fab. The information down the left hand side is really interesting and I think I sold it well. I also like the pictures I have chosen, i think it shows student life.

The weaknesses if this is that its all a bit flung together and allot more time could of been focused on it.
The text could of been improved and then the photos and the general aspect of it.

I created this on a similar document to photo shop. This allowed me to manipulate the photos and the text even though it was at times difficult. It was really good to get to practise with the soft where and hopefully the real MUSIC MAGAZINE will be better presented than this. I could of actually used photo shop or word or similar. The skills involved where just to be able to use photo shop and like, and be able to be creative with it.

Music magazine research :)

Research music magazines.

Introduction

A music magazine is a publication that entertains its audiences through images, news, interviews, articles, puzzles, lyrics and freebies. Most of them have niche audiences and focus on particular people and music genres, this allows them to form an intimate link with the audience as if assumes they know what the magazine is about.

I'm going to look at 'Q' magazine first - This magazines Target audience is the older generation and with that suggests that the magazine focuses on a generation more than a set genre of music. They represent the older generation due to the fact that other magazines ignore the older target audience and focus on teens. It is targeted at people with modern music tastes as well as the iconic music that was around fewer years ago. The general ideology suggests that it focus' on music of all aspects and generations and focuses on bands that are well known rather than newer bands as they know that the reader will want to read about them because they would be involved around their generation. New upcoming bands would fit in with the new generation of people.

MOJO targets a specific genre and that is rock. The magazine is for people that love rock but more classic rock.  The age range for this would be around late 30s and is aimed at both genders.  Mojo focus' on a genre and represent it by the way they style their magazine around it.  It shows about classic rock in the magazine and also people that are involved with it and what audience will know. Mojo targets its audience by classic rock which includes people such as boy Dylan and pink Floyd.  The ideology of Mojo is trying to show that classic rock has a value and that there is loads of artists out there and people that like it. It aims to have more articles in it that it does reviews of gigs and festivals like other magazines do like kerrang and NME. They make the magazine sophisticated and mature to suit the target audience and it focuses more on older and wiser bands and artists also.

Kerrang targets 16 - 24 year olds of both genders which are interested in punk and rock music. Mostly new and well known such as my chemical romance and bring me to the horizon. kerrang targets its audience by the images and also articles which have a range of gigs and shoots of gigs and shots. Kerrang concentrates on bands such as lost profits and green day. It keeps the audience interested by having articles and reviews about gigs, festivals and the bands involved. Also every week, there is one main big article about a new band and makes them the focus and they have a double page spread about them. Kerrangs ideology is to rebel against classic hard rock views. Kerrang focuses on rock, punk and metal and either new or well known.

Most music magazine

- Have a colour theme of 3/4 main colours, these colours are usually from a limited range as this makes the magazine stand out more to its audience.

- The masthead is at the top of the page and it's main job is to draw in the audiences attention as it suggests the genre and target audience, for example a children's pop magazine like "Smash Hits" has bubbly font which appeals to children.

- Buzz words are used in order to attract attention for example "plus" and "free", these words both get the reader to want to buy that magazine.

- Around 5 cover lines are used which also link/relate to the genre of music.
There is always a main image used which is of the main band or artist, when it is a band it's usually a long shot however when it is a solo artist it is usually a mid shot unless it is a solo artist who is looking at the camera in order to connect to the audience where their body language reflects this audience and the genre of music.

- Subsidiary images are used which may also get you to look at the magazine, especially when well known images are used. These images may be used as a back up if some of the others do not appeal to the audience.

- There is an organised layout which suggests a more mature audience as it is formal, this is then appropriate to the genre and the target audience an example of this is Q magazine as it looks more serious.

- A tag line is used which also is there to attract attention and give the magazine an edge for it's audience.

- There is also normally a plain background used as this makes the other features of the front cover stand out more and make it look more formal.

- Basic information is also featured on the front cover; which is needed for most magazines in general like a bar code, price and issue date. If the magazine is more expensive then this price tends to be smaller so that it isn't the first thing the audience see and get put off by. On the other hand if the magazine is cheap then the price is usually bigger and bolder in order to quickly draw in the audiences attention.
